SUMMARY:Streamside Concert
DESCRIPTION:“I’ve loved Johann Sebastian Bach’s transcendently beautiful music all my life\, but as a non-classically-trained steel-string guitarist and mandolinist I assumed for years that actually performing any of his work myself was out of the question. Then I acquired my first vintage Gibson mandolin\, and vaguely remembered that Bach had composed for unaccompanied violin and for unaccompanied cello…and thought\, that should be possible on mandolin\, maybe I could learn one or two short pieces…and one thing led to another…” \nSince their rediscovery in the late 19th century by legendary cellist Pablo Casals\, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suites for Solo Cello have been celebrated as unquestioned masterpieces of the Baroque era\, in the repertoire of virtually every cellist as well as being adapted for viola\, string bass\, lute\, harp\, classical guitar\, electric guitar\, marimba and even trumpet…but never before has the complete cycle been recorded on mandolin. Now\, Robin explores the boundless beauty and emotion of the Suites and their ethereal lightness when transposed from cello to mandolin\, and the result is nothing short of magical: a feast of otherworldly music overheard from some mysterious\, enchanted realm. This year\, Robin has released an album of the first three Suites\, performed on Gibson mandolins from 1920\, 1921 and 1909 respectively. Volume two will follow with Suites four through six. \n

In addition\, they were awarded 5 separate grants from the Maryland State Arts Council for both music composition and instrumental performance. They won an INDIE from The Association for Independent Music\, and Al won a GRAMMY from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Al was voted one of the Top 50 Guitarists of all time by the readers of Acoustic Guitar Magazine and in 2008 he won Silver and Bronze medals in the magazine’s “Players’ Choice Awards.” \nAl & Amy’s music was featured throughout the soundtrack of the 2009 Ken Burns EMMY-winning documentary\, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea\, and part of many more\, including Baseball: The Tenth Inning\, Prohibition\, The Dust Bowl\, and The Roosevelts. Their album\, Caledon Wood\, (which includes the main theme of the National Parks documentary) was counted among the essential albums of the past 20 years in the Acoustic Guitar Magazine 20th anniversary issue. \n“High in the Blue Ridge\,” Al & Amy’s recording of Appalachian- and Celtic-inspired melodies\, was released in early 2011. And they each released solo CDs in 2012. Al’s is a solo acoustic project featuring Fingerstyle Blues titled “It’s Only the Blues” and Amy’s features her original songs and is titled “Home\, Sweet Home.” In 2014\, Al released “Mountain Guitar – A Musical Portrait of the Appalachian Mountains” and in 2015\,  the long-awaited “Dream Guitars\, Vol. II – Hand Picked” was released. In 2016\, “Didn’t We Waltz” spotlights Amy’s deeply evocative vocals and lyrics and features both Amy’s and Al’s instrumental work\, with support from Sally Van Meter on slide guitar and Sally Sparks on Continuum Fingerboard

SUMMARY:Trail Work
DESCRIPTION:Trail Lovers\, \nLet’s plan to do some trail work on Saturday\, October 7\, from 9am to noon.  The guys doing the tree trimming along our roads have left us a pile of chips that we can spread along both trails\, especially where there’s bare dirt or high roots.  The pile looks intimidating but the chips are very lightweight.  Meanwhile\, the strongest among us can work on log steps up the steep hill beyond the stream we crossed on the Evergreen Trail the last time.  And\, believe it or not\, there’s still plenty of invasive oriental bittersweet lurking around\, but hopefully not for too much longer! \nPlease let me know if you’d like to help at kdodo5895@gmail.com \nKathy O \nAP Trails Committee \n  \n  \n  \n
